Travel to Socotra

Socotra is a remote island in the Arabian Sea, part of Yemen but geographically closer to the Horn of Africa. Often described as the "Galápagos of the Indian Ocean," Socotra is world-renowned for its surreal landscapes, unique biodiversity, and otherworldly charm.

The island is home to over 700 endemic species of plants and animals, including the iconic dragon blood tree and the desert rose. With jagged limestone plateaus, white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and towering dunes, Socotra offers a raw and untouched natural beauty rarely found elsewhere on Earth.

Socotra is steeped in cultural mystery and ancient history. Inhabited for thousands of years, the island's people live in isolated settlements, preserving traditions and dialects found nowhere else in the world.

For the adventurous traveler, Socotra is a dream. Hike through canyons to freshwater pools, camp beneath star-filled skies, swim in turquoise lagoons, and explore caves carved from limestone. And thanks to minimal light pollution and no large cities, Socotra offers some of the most vivid night skies imaginable.

From a paragliding perspective, Socotra remains largely unexplored. While a handful of pilots have flown here, the island is still wide open for discovery, with countless untouched lines, unknown launch sites, and soaring potential.

For those seeking true adventure, this is a rare opportunity to explore one of the planet’s last truly wild frontiers.

Socotra delivers an unforgettable experience.

Travel Days

Arrival

  • 20th of October in the UAE
  • We recommend arriving before then if possible

Departure

  • 29th of October from the UAE

Accommodation

During your trip you will camp along Socotra’s dune-laced coastline, in the depths of its enchanting Dragon’s blood forests, and on the islands high plateaus.

Our Bedouin-style set up includes small cotton canvas tents which are fully equipped for sleeping, a private outdoor washroom, and an area for your relaxation set up in traditional Socotri style.

We typically will move camp every 1 or 2 nights, chasing the weather and exploring as much of the island as possible.

Meals are cooked for you by an amazing local team, fresh from the land and the sea.

Socotra has sat at the crossroads of civilizations for millennia and is steeped in a rich cultural heritage. From the fishing communities who live along the island’s coastal plains to the Bedouins of Socotra’s Haggeher Mountains, Socotri people exist in delicate balance with their natural environment.

Our aim on this tour is to not only paraglide, but give you an in-depth look at how the Socotri people have been both reliant on the island’s rich biodiversity, and how they have been key custodians of the archipelago’s fragile natural ecosystems.

Weather

October and November mark transitional and early northeast monsoon periods on Socotra. The strong southwest monsoon (which runs June–September) has normally subsided by early October, and winds begin to shift direction and speed in November as the northeast monsoon begins.

Typical/average wind and weather patterns on an island do not always predict conditions and things can change quickly from day to day.

You can expect moderate to strong winds with an average of 5 - 10 mph, gusting upwards of 15-20 mph.

End of October is ideal to explore the island as temperatures are not so high. Because of the variable winds we will be able to explore and paraglide as much of the island as possible.

Highs can reach the upper 80's and the evenings generally stay warm in the low 70's.

Language

Radio and Tracking

Communication

Socotrans speak their own Semitic language, Soqotri, which has a variety of local dialects. It is a pre-literate language with no written form and , with the rapid development of the Archipelago and its opening up to the wider Arab world, it is likely to become extinct. This has already happened to closely related, pre-literate languages of the south Arabian mainland, largely as a result of schooling, radio and television, all of which are in Arabic language.

Radio and Tracking

Radio and Tracking

Radio and Tracking

All pilots are required to bring a 2M Radio.

Pilots are also required to fly with a Garmin Inreach or similar tracking device. We recommend 2 minute interval tracking.

Safety

Despite its remote location and association with Yemen, Socotra is considered safe for U.S. travelers due to its geographic isolation and political stability. The island is far removed from mainland conflict zones and has remained peaceful, with a welcoming local population and no history of targeting tourists. While the United Arab Emirates maintains a limited military presence on the island—supporting local forces and infrastructure—this has contributed to stability rather than unrest. Visitors report feeling safe throughout their stay, making Socotra a viable and unique destination for adventurous travelers.

For your peace of mind, Convergence and its local partners take a holistic approach to risk management and contingency planning. We work closely with experienced regional partners to ensure an in-depth understanding of local dynamics and conditions in the places we travel. This allows us to thoughtfully balance the realities on the ground with our guests’ safety, comfort, and overall experience.

We are requiring that all guests on tour have Global Rescue membership.
