Bhutan — a remote and rarely visited kingdom of myth and legend. High in the Himalayas, it is known as The Land of the Thunder Dragon.
One reason this country remains so unique is its isolation — both geographic and self-imposed — which has only gradually lifted over the past 50 years. Bhutan first opened its doors to visitors in the 1970s and today welcomes just 150,000 travelers a year. It is a place where tradition, culture, and selective modernity blend together in one breathtaking scene.
Our tour has been carefully designed to showcase not only Bhutan’s timeless highlights, but also to offer a flying experience like no other.
As you soar past 15th-century monasteries and hear the faint sounds of monks chanting below, you’ll understand why Bhutan is one of the most extraordinary places on Earth to fly.
Your flight from Bangkok to Paro International (PBH) is included with the trip cost.
Arrival to Bangkok - 16th of October
Departure from Bangkok - 26th of October (evening)
Please wait to book airfare until our flights in and out of Paro are confirmed.
This is an active tour, as all takeoffs require a hike of approximately 500 ft (150 m) to 2,400 ft (730 m) of elevation gain. To help conserve your energy for flying, porters will be provided for each pilot to carry gear and ensure you arrive at launch well rested.
Takeoff elevations range from 10,500 ft (3,200 m) to 13,000 ft (4,000 m), offering stunning views of Bhutan’s high mountain valleys.
Throughout the journey, we’ll travel across the country using vans, SUVs, and one domestic flight, allowing us to reach the most scenic flying sites and cultural highlights.
The properties we’ll be using on this tour are among the finest Bhutan has to offer — winners of multiple awards such as Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best and featured in National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World. These accommodations provide the comfort and relaxation you’ll appreciate after a long day of hiking and flying at altitude. Enjoy amenities such as traditional hot stone baths infused with local herbs, professional massage services, and curated cultural activities.
For two nights, we’ll stay in a remote region of the country, where our partner company will host us in a luxury glamping setup. Spacious walk-in tents, private showers and bathrooms, a dining tent, and comfortable beds with sleeping bags will all be provided. Our local chef will prepare some of the finest cuisine Bhutan has to offer.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included throughout the tour.
We choose October for a number of reasons. It marks the end of the monsoon season and generally brings clearer skies and reliable paragliding conditions. While we aim to fly as much as possible, it’s important to keep expectations realistic — occasional rain showers or overdevelopment can still occur, even outside the monsoon period.
We arrive at launch as early as possible to make the most of each day’s flying window. All sites face south, southeast, or southwest, and typically work well earlier in the day. Cross-country flying is limited due to the terrain and designated landing zones outside the Black-Necked Crane habitat. Some sites offer short XC potential, but most days will focus on site flying.
At the very least, you can expect breathtaking views and some of the most scenic flights in a paraglider imaginable.
We’ve partnered with Yangphel Adventure Travel, one of Bhutan’s original and most respected tour operators. Since 1988, their team of local experts ensures that every detail of your journey is executed with precision — including the acquisition of all necessary permits for our paragliding adventure.
Bhutan is an extraordinary destination, but also a sensitive one. We follow strict environmental and cultural guidelines to help ensure that paragliding here remains sustainable for generations to come. The first paragliding tours in Bhutan took place in 2005, led by just a handful of pioneering pilots. Since then, access and infrastructure have evolved dramatically.
Convergence and Yangphel are proud to have helped pave the way for responsible paragliding operations in Bhutan. By working directly with the Ministry of Tourism and aviation authorities, we strive to make flying in Bhutan a sustainable practice — one that benefits paragliding pilots, supports local communities, and protects the Black-Necked Crane along with all of Bhutan’s remarkable flora and fauna.
The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a daily charge for tourists to promote responsible, high-value, low-volume tourism, fund development initiatives like infrastructure, healthcare, and education, and protect the nation's unique culture and environment.
The cost is $100/day and is included in your tour cost.
Bhutan's currency is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (Nu.), pegged at par with the Indian Rupee. Tourists can exchange U.S. Dollars and other major currencies for Ngultrum at our hotel in Paro. We recommend changing no more than $100 USD.
October has pleasant weather and stunning colorful landscapes. The temperature begins to drop though, ranging from +22°C (72F) to +10°C (50F) during daytime and +8°C(46F) to +0°C(32F) at nights
This time of year is usually quite dry, but still can produce rain showers in the afternoon.
The bottom line is you should come prepared for anything.
All pilots are required to bring a 2M Radio.
We require having a Garmin Inreach on this tour.
Most cell carrier networks will work in the country. Please check with your cell phone provider for the exact rates. Alternatively, you can choose to buy a local SIM card if you prefer. Both E-sim and physical SIM can be bought upon arrival at the Paro airport. Cell service can be spotty in remote areas.
We will provide a starlink for some limited internet access while at camp and you can expect all hotels to have high speed internet.
A list of required documents will be sent to you upon booking. Our in-country team will handle submission of the documents for your permit.
